WHITE PRIVILEGE CARD FOR SALE

A friend of mine posted this little rant about “white privilege” on Facebook a few weeks ago:

For Sale

My White Privilege Card.

The Card is quite old but in mint condition.

Never been used.

Reason for selling:

It hasn't done anything for me!

No free college, no free food,

no free housing, no free anything.

I've had to go to work every day of my life

while paying a boatload of taxes to fund

free stuff for those who suck off the Government teat.

If interested, I prefer cash but willing to do

an even trade for a victim card,

which seems to be widely accepted

and comes with countless benefits

without even having to show the card.

If interested contact me on my

cell phone that I pay for every month.

Serious buyers only

And I just wanted to share some of my comments:

My White Privilege Card…It hasn't done anything for me!

And boy, does that say a lot right there. Of course it hasn’t – because you’ve never been aware of the fact that you actually have anything like white privilege.

No free college, no free food, no free housing, no free anything

White privilege doesn’t mean you’ve had life handed to you on a golden plate. It just means that you being white has not worked against you. It means that you’ve never had to face discrimination because of your skin color. It means your college admission wasn’t questioned.

Free stuff for those who suck off the Government teat.

Do you think that only non-white people live in housing projects? Have you ever been unemployed? Have you ever had to worry about how you could feed your kids? There are legitimate ways our government provides people who are in less-than-ideal circumstances.

Willing to do an even trade for a victim card

Victim? Let me guess something here. You have never walked in for a job interview, and realized you were the only person of “your color” there – and realized you weren’t going to come back for a second interview. You’ve never seen people cross the street when they see you coming at night. You’ve never had a police officer pull you over for no good reason – you’ve never been patted down for a weapon.

You don’t think twice about which part of town you are driving through to get someplace. It actually reminds me, a woman, a great deal of being male – you don’t worry about where you go for a run, or how dark it is when you walk out of a store, or who is following you down the street)

I believe the systemic racism and misogyny in our society is much worse than many people think, and desperately needs to be addressed. This means those with privilege -- white, straight, male, economic, etc. -- need to start listening, even if you don't like what you're hearing, so we can start dismantling everything that's causing people to be marginalized.
